It was only recently that we saw the Samsung Cetus SGH-i917 paying a visit to the FCC’s big house with only an outline of the handset in tow which forced you to rely on your imagination to fill in the open space. However, we’re just now getting treated to the first images of the Windows Phone 7 powered device from the Korean maker which definitely has one polished look to it. Although it’s difficult to gather what material the Samsung Cetus is constructed out of, you can absolutely tell in the image where it’s not powered on that it’s one smooth looking one that almost resembles a polished stone. Additionally, we can gather that the charging port is located on the top edge of the smartphone – making it an unusual spot for it, but then again, we’ve seen Samsung do it with the pretty much all of their Galaxy S models. This Windows Phone 7 device is shaping up to be one looker due to the fact that it will feature a 4” WVGA AMOLED display, front-facing VGA camera, and also a healthy sized 5-megapixel shooter in its rear. With each passing day, we’re only getting closer to the inevitable launch of Microsoft’s next-gen platform.

Hewlett-Packard will release a tablet PC based on Palm’s webOS operating system in “early 2011,” the head of HP’s PC division said Thursday.

HP’s tablet plans have been under close watch since it announced plans to buy Palm in April for US$1.2 billion. There was speculation at the time that HP would ditch its plans for a Windows 7 tablet and use Palm’s webOS instead.

Since then the company has said it will sell tablets based on both operating systems, but it hadn’t confirmed when the webOS device will go on sale.

“You’ll see us with a Microsoft product out in the near future, and a webOS-based product in early 2011,” Todd Bradley, the head of HP’s Personal Systems Group, said during HP’s quarterly earnings call Thursday. He didn’t provide any other details.

Last month, HP said the Windows tablet will be aimed squarely at enterprise users, while the webOS tablet will be a consumer-oriented device.

The devices will have to compete against Apple’s hot-selling iPad, Cisco’s recently announced Cius tablet for businesses, and tablets planned by several other vendors.

Online documents uncovered by IDG News Service last month suggest HP’s Windows 7 tablet will be called the HP Slate 500. The company has also sought a trademark for the name PalmPad.

Tablets are only one of the uses HP has planned for Palm’s lightweight webOS. It will also use it for smartphones, netbooks and Web-connected printers.

The dust still hasn’t settled with all the updates rolling out for Android 2.2 (Froyo), and all the info swirling its successor 3.0 (Gingerbread), but now we have to memorize yet another sweet sounding moniker?

The ubiquitous “multiple sources” have cited Honeycomb as the next iteration of Google’s mobile OS. While Gingerbread aims to completely revamp the user interface, Android 3.x (Honeycomb) will be more of a minor update, the way 2.1 followed 2.0 (Éclair).

Google used to say that only the major releases will have sweet-sounding names, and minor releases will come with plain numbers, but they strayed away with 2.2 by naming it Froyo. We wouldn’t call Android 2.2 insignificant update given what it brought to the table, so we have high hopes for Honeycomb – if only we knew what Gingerbread will be. We sincerely hope Google will slow down with those releases after Android 3.0, as it promised, since we are getting sugar-rushed every two or three months now, this can’t be good for our health.

Thanks to :- Phonearena

The rumored HTC Desire HD handset has now appeared everywhere, but in an official announcement by its maker. We hadthe specs leak (4.3” screen and 8MP camera), the bootleg picture, and now the phone was spotted on an Amazon UK website.

The page has since been pulled down, but we can judge from the listed £415 (about $650) price that the high-end specs are spot on. Could this be nothing else but the GSM version of the EVO 4G? We can only guess, but it’s for a fact that we will have another great phone in the already stellar fall crop to choose from.

One such device is the Sony Ericsson Julie, a Windows Phone 7 device rumoured on the Sony Ericsson forum IT168.

The device is said to feature a 4 inch screen like the SE X10, a welcome sliding QWERTY keyboard, multi-touch of course, and a 1 Ghz processor, standard for the Windows Phone 7 platform.

Lasomero, the leaker, commented on the fact that the handset will feature Xbox integration, which is notable for the PS3-pushing Sony, but of course, like the 1 Ghz processor and multi-touch, this is standard for the platform.

Lasomero is confident the handset will be released before the end of the year, likely joined by a flotilla of other devices.

When Steve Jobs announced the iPhone 4 at WWDC, the Apple CEO used some marketing terms likeRetina Display and told the audience why the high-resolution IPS Apple display is better than competing technologies. Well, Samsung, an Apple manufacturing partner for some of its electronics component including fabricating the CPU and providing memory for the iPhone, isn’t one to sit still. According to a rep from Samsung, “Structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AMOLED display technology.”

Samsung claims that the Apple display, while quadrupling the resolution, does little to add to the clarity of the screen and also increases the battery drain beyond what AMOLED/Super AMOLED can offer. The rep said that the IPS retinal display screen does at most 3 to 5 percent better in terms of clarity while draining the battery life by as much as 30 percent more.

The downside with AMOLED is that the screen becomes less usable outdoors and get washed out quickly, which is a reason why Samsung developed Super AMOLED technology. We have yet to see a Super AMOLED display outdoors, but indoors on the show floor of CTIA in Spring 2010, the Super AMOLED screen on the Samsung Galaxy S is a lot brighter and crisper than its AMOLED counterpart.

According to Apple representatives on hand at WWDC, the display used on the iPhone 4 is closer to the iPhone 3GS than the iPad when viewing outdoors. Users of the iPhone and iPad have noted that the iPad screen gets washed out in bright sunlight whereas the iPhone screen doesn’t have that effect as much.

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha recently said that the company plans to bring a handset to market by the end of the year powered by a 2GHz processor. Motorola spokesperson Juli Burda has confirmed for Phone Scoop that this is indeed fact, and the company will introduce a handset with a 2GHz processor in board later this year. Neither Jha nor Burda provided any more information about the device. Many of today’s high-end smartphones are powered by 1GHz chips, with some of them coming from Qualcomm. Qualcomm has publicly announced plans to introduce 1.5GHz Snapdragon processors (SnapDragon dual-core QSD8672, for example), but hasn’t said anything about 2GHz processors yet.

Before the Samsung Galaxy S exploded onto the scene at CTIA showcasing Samsung’s flagship high-end Android handset, the good people of South Korea were getting treated to the Samsung SHW-M100S. One would’ve thought that Samsung would be making Android handsets in its own local market market ahead of others, but the M100S was actually the first from the manufacturer to grace the country. Now it looks like a variant of that handset will be making its way across a vast distance and find itself in the UK where it’s going by the name of the Samsung Galaxy Apollo. Samsung’s UK website has the smartphone sitting side by side with devices like the Wave and Galaxy S, but it claims that it will be “coming soon.” Unfortunately there was no mention of its specs on the site, but if it’s going to follow the M100S, it would probably pack a 3.7” WVGA AMOLED display, 5-megapixel camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Android 2.1.

It might only feel like it, but handsets like the HTC Touch Pro2 are not ancient devices. However, stack the Touch Pro2 up against a recent Android release and it might look like the Touch Pro2 came from another era. For example, while Android handsets use capacitive display that requires a touch from your finger to move things on your screen, Windows Mobile 6.1 phones have a resistive touchscreen that work with the pressure placed on the screen from a finger, pen cap or stylus. The main difference is that while the latter displays are one-touch, the former are multi-touch. So while users of Android phones can use Pinch-to-Zoom in the browser or in the photo gallery, most Windows Mobile 6.1 owners are stuck using things like zoom bars or volume rockers to adjust the size of the image on the phone. But thanks to an app by OndraSter that hopefully will soon see the light of day, Windows Mobile users with build 6 or 6.1 will be able to trick the device into thinking that it is running multi-touch, and as you can see in the videos, you will be able to Pinch-to-Zoom in the browser-which in this case is an Opera Mobile 9.5 browser. While the developer isn’t giving away any secrets, using the app requires you to keep one finger in place while moving the other finger. This would seem to fool the phone into thinking that the screen is being “pinched”. There is no word on when the app will be launched, but when it is, a whole group of Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1 owners are going to feel like they just stepped out of a time machine.

The iPhone already has a number of paid and subscription GPS navigation services including AT&T Navigator via TeleNav, Navigon, CoPilot, Magellan, Sygic, TomTom, and others, but now Skobbler is bringing free navigation to the platform, which could give Apple a boost when compared with Google’s Android with Google Maps with Navigation OTA, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile with OTA Bing navigation, and Nokia with OVI Maps with navigation with locally stored maps on a memory card–all mentioned solutions offer voice-guided, turn-by-turn instructions. The way that Skobbler is able to deliver free navigation is that the service uses its mapping data from OpenStreetMap, a free, open-source mapping database, rather than from solutions from TeleAtlas or Navteq.

The maps employed by Skobbler are user-edited and user-updated, much like Wikipedia is on the Internet. This allows the entire thing to be free, but then you are relying on the masses to tell you where you’re going and how to get there–and depending where you are, this could either be a really good thing or a very bad thing.

You can download Skobbler by searching for it on your iPhone in the App Store
